ESSENTIAL QUESTION

Essential Question A2 - How have economic, political, and cultural decisions promoted or prevented the growth of personal freedom, individual responsibility, equality and respect for human dignity.

Prior to the Civil War, political decisions such as not abolishing slavery and the introduction of things such as the Gag Rule prevented the growth of personal freedom, equality, and respect for human dignity. The slaves in the South were still slaves and their owners were doing inhumane things to them.

However, during the time before the civil war, the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin, "The North Star", and "The Liberator" promoted the growth of personal freedom, equality, and respect for human dignity. These pieces of literature made the readers feel more sympathy towards the slaves as these works touched upon these topics. For example, Uncle Tom's Cabin was in the perspective of a slave and it allowed for the readers to understand in depth how unjust slavery is.
